Spring DWA 2012

Authors Note: The book that I am currently reading is called Chain's. When I picked out this book to read for literature group I had figured that it was going to be about slavery. I later figured out that I was right out the slavery part but there is so much more to this book. I love how they incorporate the war that is going on in the book it is the Revolutionary War. Around this war that is going on there are many secrets around town. That’s why I wanted to write a poem about the subject. I am working on my descriptive word choice so that you can get picture in your mind. Throughout this poem I am also striving to improve my voice so that reader can know that I am writing it from my heart. I am making sure that in this poem there is enough meat and content in the wording so the reader knows what I am trying to say.

Keep hidden
Away from the world
Is it a method
Or a scheme
To try to find pleasure
In avoiding reality
Thinking no one knows
But do they
Keeping one
May drive you to the grave
Does it remain concealed?
It’s the mystery of the unknown
Secrets

LEADERSHIP

Authors Note: In this essay I am doing a persuasive on why I should get a scholarship to a leadership camp that I desire to go to. I worked a lot on making my voice sound very strong and confident. I choice to write this way because I wanted the fact to show that I want to go to camp and I deserve it.

Strong leaders will always be needed and learning leadership qualities is something that will last forever. The need for these skills will not go away after school or Student Council is over. This is why a student needs to find ways to learn how to be a leader throughout their years of education. Learning this ability of being a leader at such a young age will make a difference in the rest of their life. These are skills many people want to have the chance to learn, but don’t always get it.

I was first introduced to this camp when my older sister attended during her middle school years.  When we dropped her off each year there was so much energy coming from the counselors and when we picked her up there was even more energy coming from all the students. Since then I have had a desire to go to leadership camp.  The chance to learn more about what it takes to be a strong leader would be remarkable and useful, since I want to be the Student Council Vice President.  In addition to learning new skills you get to collect fresh ideas from other schools around the state.  Not only would it benefit the school but it would also help me in my daily life.  These are the main reasons I want to go to this life changing camp.

If given the opportunity to attend this camp I am hoping to strengthen existing skills and learn new ones that would assist me in life.  The abilities I really want to develop are in the areas of communication, leadership, and handling responsibility.  I also want to gain more self-confidence so I can hear others comments and not take them personally.

Learning is great but taking what you learn and putting it into action is even better; this is what I want to accomplish.  I love that student council helps the school but I also want to get our students involved in helping the community, targeting those in need such as the  elderly and homeless. I would make it a top priority to get out into our town and HELP!

Teachers, advisors and other adults in my life have encouraged me and told me I have the potential to be a great leader. WASC camp will enhance the leadership skills I currently possess and allow me to push myself to new heights that can be used in the role of a Vice President as well as a middle school student.  My mom and dad have always told me you have to work hard at something you want and receiving this scholarship would allow me to help earn my way.   If chosen to represent ASA Clark Middle School I will be honored and I will not let the school down.

The Life of a Dancer

Every little kid looks forward to something when they grow up, whether it’s going to prom or getting your first home run. Since I was four years old, I have wanted to become the most superb dancer, and only the best dancers are on pointe. Having this goal in my life has pushed me to reach farther than the stars and to keep trying even though things may get rough. Everyone should have a main goal in their life or something they want to achieve. This is something that has helped me to grasp my dream so I encourage others to do the same.

When I was a little younger than four years old I started dancing with Steps of Grace Ballet School. At this age I had no intention of having a real love for this sport, but this was not the concern for a four year old girl.  Dancing at this age was pretty simple. Put on tights, hair in a pony tail have mom drive you to class. After that it was Miss Alyce (my dance instructor) who would tell you what to do.

Growing older I started to notice the better dancers. How graceful and glorious they were running across the stage with their perfectly pointed toes and muscle filled calves. From then on I wanted to be one of them one of the “big girls”. Dancing after that became something new to me. It developed into more of a sport, a hobby that I actually wanted to work towards. Not something that my mom wanted me to do because she thought it was cute too see little girls prancing around the room.

Having ballet became a real sport didn’t mean that it was not fun for me anymore it meant that it became my goal. There is a big difference for just doing something to do it and doing something because you love it. Ballet was something that I loved. Slowly but surely it became my passion. However having a passion was a problem for me at times.

When I was ten years old I was doing two sports that I had a deep passion for, soccer and dance. Like I said before having passion was a problem for me. I loved both of these sports so much. At the time these where my only after school activities and it worked for me.

A year later, I began struggling to give both of these sports 110 percent. I was leaving soccer practice early to go to dance or leaving dance early to go soccer practice. Crazy actions like eating in the car, changing in the car, and rushing around were all a part of my two passions. At this point I knew I could not give my all, anywhere.

Time has passed and the problem of not giving my all has hit me. This was the time that my parents and I made a huge decision. I would have to stop one of the two sports. I was going to have to stop one of my passions and it was heartbreaking.

It was a very gloomy time for me. There was crying and much of it. The thought of leaving one of my groups of friends and not seeing them was very hard.  There were nights where I was awakening with these hoard thoughts of my friends hating me for this decision.

It took time to regain my confidence in my decision but with the strength of God by my side I knew I could do it. Though it did take much courage to tell my soccer team at the last game that I would not be trying out next year, it paid off. I was finally relived for once and it was very soothing to my life.

Summer has now passed and I am comfortable with my decision. During the summer I told my dance studio that I had given up soccer to focus on dance. My dance instructor was pleased. Something about giving 110% communicates that you are dedicated to that passion.

God works in many ways. He showed his love for me in the results of my decision. I had envisioned that many of my fellow soccer members would think I was a quitter or a girly girl just for choosing dance; however no one acted this way. They were shocked and somewhat sad, but proud of my confident in my decision. It was quite an experience to know that my friends accept me no matter what kind of sports I do and they are always here to support me.

The whole reason I decided my decision was because I wanted to continue with my lifelong dream which is to learn to dance on pointe. This is something a dancer waits for, all of their life.  This goal was not going to be accomplished if I was doing soccer so I had to make that decision whether to forget my goal and make a new one or continue with my currant goal and achieve it.

Without dedication and hard work my lifetime goal may never have been achieved. As another ballet year came to an end my ballet instructor announced the most exhilarating news I have ever heard. In the upcoming year of ballet I would be training on pointe. This news lifted my sprites and motivated me to move forward and begin thinking of my next life goal. I know that with a little inspiration I will have the will power to reach for the stars and make a difference in my life.
